The Competitors

    Brian Geiger (TheFoodGeek)

BrianThree or so years ago, Brian J. Geiger set out to become an expert in what makes cooking work. Combining scientific knowledge with a healthy* appetite, he has attempted many crazy things in the cooking and baking front, including writing for Fine Cooking Magazine. Somewhere down the line, he suggested that one of his pies was once highly regarded, and 15 minutes later, local news organizations were ready to promote the challenge between him and Marijean. Will his science save him now? Or will he just eat 20 test pies** between now and the contest?
*- Healthy in a non-medical sense. Skip down to number three or four in the dictionary entry.
    **- Mmmm. Pie.

    Marijean Jaggers (StLouisWorkingMom)

MarijeanA little over a year ago, Marijean set out on a mission: to become a master pie baker. For a year, she has made approximately two dozen pies, some epic disasters, others new favorites. Readers of her personal blog, www.stlworkingmom.com have followed the journey called Life of Pie, particularly the ongoing search for lard. While Marijean laments the fact that people now think of her when they see lard in a store, the association with the mission to become the Pie Master has more than made up for that unfortunate side effect.
